Zinaida Tessler — better known as Tess, since no one in the OBX seems to possess the brainpower needed to pronounce her name — had to find that shit out the hard way.
What can she say? She used to be a Kook. She used to think that she, a girl who's greatest accomplishment to date was tying her father's yacht to the dock, was invincible. Indestructible. Untouchable. That's just how your brain works when you've been pampered from the moment your parents saw the first sonogram of you. You don't know what the real world is like. You don't understand that there's not always going to be a pile of cash to cushion your fall.
Maybe that's where her parents went wrong.
But then they died, and so did Tess, inside . . . and she's been alone ever since. (Alone translating to: moving to the north side of the island and living in her loonie bin Aunt Shirley's unfinished basement.)
Seriously though. All is good — save that it isn't — and Tess has already approximated who's to blame.
