Locker 12, Millrose Way was rusty, half the blue paint was in flakes on the floor and the door was dented.

"go on then, Mia. open it, since you dragged us all out here, probably to our deaths." John B folded his arms behind me.

Pope had chosen to stay in the car.

i walked towards the door, key in one hand, Zac's switchblade in the other.

"hey," JJ grabbed my wrist. "i'll do it."

"be my guest." i dropped the key into his hand.

i stayed by his side, knife ready, as he unlocked the door.

as soon at it swung open we jumped back, expecting... expecting something.

there was nothing in the locker except dust and cobwebs.

"well thanks for wasting our time," John B began to walk to the car. "now let's go surfing."

"hey, wait," Kie called. "what's that?"

i followed the point of her finger to where an envelope lay on the floor, half covered over with dirt.

JJ grabbed the blade from my hand and crept into the locker, snatching the envelope and retreating quickly.

John B and Kie crowded us as JJ opened the old brown envelope.

"shit, what does it say?" JJ handed me the paper. "i can't read cursive!"

"it's a... map." i turned it over in my hands.

"a treasure map," John B peered over my shoulder.

"what's a treasure map doing in a locker than can only be accessed with a dead man's key?" Jonny frowned.

"the real question is what are we going to do with a treasure map?" Kie asked.

"find the treasure," i said slowly, as if i was talking to a thick person.

"what if it's dangerous?!" Pope leaned out of the window.

"what if it's dangerous?!" JJ shook his head. "it's all part of the fun!"

"we could get hurt!" Pope replied. "or die!"

"die knowing we could've found treasure and had the best summer of our lives." i rolled my eyes. "if you guys don't want to, fine. me and JJ will find it."

"no you-" John B began, but i cut him off with a glare.

"you don't tell me what i can and can't do, John B."

"i'm trying to look out for you, Mia!"

"well don't! i can look out for myself!"

"no you can't! all your life you've been surrounded by brothers who'd kill anyone who touched you!"

"that doesn't mean anything!" i spat.

"that means everything. you're too naïve." with that, he turned and stormed back to the car.

Kie cleared her throat and followed my cousin.

"i don't think you're naïve... if it helps." JJ spoke up.

"thanks," i said bluntly and walked to the car.

the drive back was silent and awkward.

JJ tried to make conversation, but Kie and Pope gave short, simple replies.

"hey, that cloud looks like a surfboard!"

"oh yeah,"

"that's funny,"
