Today my baby cousin is coming to outerbanks. I'm now her legal guardian as her parents have recently lost custody of her, and they put me as her godfather when she was born probably because I'm the most responsible one in our family.

The court thinks I'm 18 so that's why they are letting her come with me but in reality I'm 17.

But there's another thing the Pogues don't know... Y/n is deaf. I know sign language, but the Pogues don't so I guess they will have to learn or ask me to translate or something, which I have no problem with.

Right now none of them know she's coming, so it's gonna be a total surprise.

I'm sitting on JB's couch waiting for y/n to show up with her social worker, they are driving here from 5 hours away (idk I couldn't think of a location) and there estimate time of being here is 10am and it's 9:40am

I hear a car pulling up, so I get up and run outside, seeing y/ns social worker get out of the car and help y/n out

Y/n sees me and runs over to me, with me picking her up and putting her on my waist when she got close enough

I hear her crying on my shoulder so I start rubbing her back as a type of comfort. I don't know if these are happy tears or sad tears

Her social worker comes up to me and starts talking

"ok these papers are for you. It explains everything. I'm also gonna stop by once every 10 weeks to do a check in. Do you know what her school schedule will be? " her social worker says

"she will go to public with me this year as I'm a senior (he's a junior but graduating a year early to pull off the " he's 18") and then when I graduate I'm gonna homeschool her."

"is there a reason she can't stay at public when your out of school?"

"shes deaf! A. I don't want her experiencing being bullied B. I'm positive the students or teachers don't know sign language so there would be no way of them talking to her to teach her. At the public school she will be attending my classes with me, all her teachers have gave me all her work so she will work on it, in my class with me so she can ask questions because I have already taken those classes.. Obviously, and I won't have to worry about kids her age bullying her. " I respond

"Ok. As long as she gets her work done I won't have a problem. I guess this is the end. I'll see you in 10 weeks."

He nods as a way of saying bye and she walks away to her car. He turns around and starts walking inside the house

He sits on the couch and sat you on his lap facing him

"How are you holding up princess" he signs to you

"Why do mommy and daddy hate me?" you sign back

He sighs, and hugs you. He hooks his fingers on your chin lifting your head up and lips "I'll love you forever and always"

You kiss his cheek and lay your head on his shoulder, he kisses your head and lightly massages your head to help you fall asleep

Right when you fall asleep, John b walked out of his room and into the living room

"Who's the kid? Please tell me you didn't have a kid this whole time and you didn't know and the mom dropped her off today" John b whined

JJ chuckles "this is my goddaughter and cousin"

"Oh ok, that makes me feel a little better. Why's she here? How long is she gonna be here?" John asked

"Her parents lost custody of her and since I'm her godfather she went to me. And for your second question, she's living with me until she wants and is old enough to move out. I'm probably gonna pick up extra shifts so I can pay for some type of apartment" JJ said

"Oh ok. Well you guys can always stay here, I don't mind. "

"You say that, but she's difficult. She has nightmares pretty much every night, she is a picky eater, she has to have someone with her when she bathes because she'll get scared if she's alone, has to have some sort of nightlight, and a lot more. Pretty sure after the second night your gonna be kicking us out" JJ says

"I would never kick you out. But JJ she can't control that stuff, she's fine I promise. You guys can stay here. Give me a list of things she likes and is allergic to and I'll go to the store"

"You don't have to-" JJ starts but gets cut off

"I'm going to" John b states sternly

JJ nods and career gets paper and pen and writes all the things you like and all the things your allergic to.

After, John b leaves straight away to go to the store

After awhile, he's still gone but you start to wake up

When JJ notices your awake he kisses both your cheeks as a greeting of good morning/good night

You giggle and he smiles, you hug up for a few then pull back

"I love you bubby" you sign to him

"I love you too sweetheart" he signs

He eventually sets you down on the ground so you can play and he gets on his phone

Soon John b walks through the door with groceries and sees you awake

When you notice him, you get up and run to JJ hugging his leg tight and squeezing your eyes shut

You feel a hand rubbing your arm and look up to see JJ looking at you concerned

He picks you up and sets you on his lap when you see the boy again

You squeal and hide your face in jjs neck

JJ taps the side of your thigh and makes you look up at him

"His name is John b, he's my friend. He's not gonna hurt you I promise. I'm not gonna let anyone hurt you babe, you have to trust me" JJ signs to you

You look at him for a minute then get down and walk to John b who is still confused on why jj just did asl and how jj learned to do asl.

You hug his leg and he puts his hand on the back of your head, doing his best to hug you back

After that you went back to jj and crawled on his lap and barried your head In His shoulder

"Wanna tell me why you just did asl? Or how you learned it? Or why you learned it?" John b asked

"She's deaf John b. I've known sign language since she was 4. She was in an accident at the age of 4 and lost her hearing. We all had to learn sign language like she had to, too. At age 6 we all stopped asl because she had gotten a ear piece that allowed her to hear but her parents destroyed it when they asked her to do something and she didn't hear them because she didn't have it in, so we had to go back to asl. When I got the news she was coming I went to the doctor with her files and got an ear piece mad for her but it hasn't come in yet, and I don't know if she'll wear it." jj said

"Oh... I'm sorry" John b say d feeling guilty because he pressured jj into telling him.

"It's fine"

Eventually all the other pogues come, and see you, asking the same questions as John B
