Rafe*

I was walking down the hall, biting my nail. I knew they made it on the ship. They weren't going to let us get away with the gold and the cross. I just needed to find them.

"Rafe!" I turned back and saw Wheezie running to me with a worried look on her face. "What is going on? Dad said Sarah was here, but I can't find her. Where--?" I had no time for this. Dad was convinced he could make Sarah change her mind about us, but I knew it was hopeless. She was corrupted. But that was the thing about being the favourite, everyone had hope for you.

My eye twitched. "Listen," I said. "Sarah's not important right now, okay?" Wheezie groaned and moved to walk away. "Wheezie, I got something a-and right now, it's way more important than her okay?"

Maybe I had lost one sister, but I still had another one.

I brought her down to the very bottom floor and down the dim hallway. At the end of the hallway, there was a wheel, which opened the door. I twisted the wheel with both hands. It creaked before it opened, bringing us to a large metal room.

There were oxygen tanks, rope, and other random stuff, but my eyes were glued to the crate in the middle. I went to it and yanked at the clasps. Wheezie stood there with her hands crossed as I grabbed the side of the plank and pushed it off. My hands dug at the cloth impatiently as I uncovered the beautiful cross. Its gems and gold-plated symbols twinkled, and I couldn't help but smile. "I got this." I looked at my little sister, whose eyebrows had shot up.

"Wow," she breathed and stared at the cross, worth millions of dollars.

For some reason, I felt a bit disappointed. "The family was in trouble," I started. She needed to understand how important this was. "We thought Dad was dead." I came to her and crouched down to her. "I'm the one who stepped up, okay?" I laid my hand on my chest. "I took care of business."

And all of a sudden, she seemed uninterested and stared at the cross flatly. I forced myself not to let it affect me. Wheezie gave out a sharp, "Mmhm."

I pointed to the cross. "This thing is worth millions of dollars. Do you understand that?" I whispered at her, but she wasn't paying attention.

Wheezie turned to me and shrugged. "Honestly, I-- I don't care about this. I don't care about the money. I care about Sarah."

I shut my eyes and felt something rise deep in my chest. "Listen--"

"Is she okay?" she raised her voice.

"We talked about this--"

"No one will tell me!"

"Wheezie!" I silenced her as she stared at me with angst. "Listen, this is the cross of Santo Domingo, okay? It's worth more than the gold from the Royal Merchant." Wheezie's brown eyes were looking at me like Sarah's had before I nearly drowned her.

I didn't care about what Sarah thought about me, but I cared about Wheezie. She looked out for me, even when I couldn't do the same for her. "Look," I quieted my voice. "I got this for all of us, for our family." She gulped as I said, "Don't forget that."

I stood up to my full height and walked around to the crate, placing the plank back on top of the cross. "But what's going to happen now?" she asked, her voice small.

I tried smiling at her. "It'll work out." I regretted saying that the second it came out of my mouth because the last time I had said that...well, shit happened.

The clasp of the crate clicked close.

Wheezie had gone, to Rose or to continue looking for Sarah -- I didn't know, but it wasn't why I was biting the inside of my cheek, or why I was looking in every corner shadow that moved even the slightest bit. I also didn't know how I had made my way back to my room. But to know that I had one person on my side, let me breathe out a sigh of relief.
